dryer vent fire

A clogged dryer vent usually gives itself away in five ways: clothes that need more than one cycle to dry, an outside flap that stays shut while the dryer runs, a laundry room that gets unusually hot, a burning smell, and lint piling up around the exterior vent. If you notice any of them, stop using the dryer for long loads and get the vent checked. As for how often to clean it, once a year is the baseline. Big households and long vent runs need it more often. Dryer vent cleaning with BlueGuard starts from $199.

Here’s why it matters. The National Fire Protection Association puts it plainly in its clothes dryer safety tip sheet: the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. And with winter coming, the dryer in most Ottawa homes is about to work a lot harder.

What are the warning signs of a clogged dryer vent?

These are the six we see most often on the job, roughly in the order homeowners notice them.

1. Your clothes take two cycles to dry

This is the most common sign of a clogged dryer vent. Wet air has nowhere to go, so it hangs around in the drum. Towels come out warm and damp. Most people blame the dryer and start shopping for a new one. In our experience, the machine is usually fine and the vent is the problem.

2. The outside flap doesn’t open

Go outside while the dryer is running. The flap or louvres on the exterior cap should push open and you should feel a strong, warm stream of air. If the flap barely moves, or stays shut, you’re likely dealing with a clogged dryer vent or a stuck flap. NFPA lists this exact check: make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is operating.

3. The laundry room gets hot

A clogged dryer vent traps heat. You’ll notice the room feels like a sauna, or the top of the dryer is hot to the touch. Some homeowners also see more humidity, like fogged windows in the laundry room.

4. You smell something burning

A scorched or hot-lint smell during a cycle is a stop-now sign. Turn the dryer off. Don’t run it again until someone has looked at the vent.

5. Lint is collecting where it shouldn’t

Check around the exterior cap, behind the dryer, and inside the drum opening under the lint screen. Lint in those spots is a classic clogged dryer vent sign: it’s backing up instead of blowing out.

6. It’s been more than a year

No symptoms doesn’t mean no buildup. If you can’t remember the last time the vent was cleaned, it’s due. A clogged dryer vent builds slowly and quietly.

Why does a clogged dryer vent turn into a fire risk?

Lint is fuel. It’s fine, dry and fluffy, and your lint screen doesn’t catch all of it. The rest gets blown into the vent, where it sticks to the walls and piles up at every bend.

As the pile grows, less air gets out. Less airflow means the heat stays inside the dryer and the vent instead of leaving the house. So you’ve got a growing pile of fuel sitting right where the heat is building. That’s a clogged dryer vent in one sentence.

The vent itself makes a difference too. We still pull out white plastic and thin foil accordion duct in Ottawa homes, crushed behind the dryer. NFPA recommends rigid or flexible metal venting to keep air moving properly. If yours is plastic, replace it.

How often should you clean a dryer vent?

Once a year for most homes. That’s NFPA’s guidance too: clean the vent once a year, or more often if your clothes are taking longer than normal to dry. Some homes end up with a clogged dryer vent sooner because lint builds up faster.

Your homeHow often to clean the vent
One or two people, short vent straight out the wallOnce a year
Family of four or more, daily laundryEvery six to nine months
Long run, several bends, or a vent that exits on the roofEvery six to nine months
Pets that shedEvery six to nine months
Any home where drying time has crept upNow, then back to a regular schedule

Long runs are common in newer Barrhaven, Riverside South and Kanata townhomes, where the laundry sits on the second floor and the vent travels through a ceiling to the roof. That’s where we find a clogged dryer vent most often, sometimes packed solid, because nobody can see it and nobody can reach it.

Why is a clogged dryer vent worse in winter?

Three reasons, and Ottawa gets all three.

  • More drying. Nobody’s hanging sheets on the line in January. Every load goes through the dryer, and snow gear and heavy towels add up fast.
  • Snow at the exterior cap. NFPA specifically says to check that the outdoor vent flap isn’t covered by snow. After a big storm, a drift or a ridge of plowed snow can block a low cap completely.
  • Cold vent runs. Warm, wet air cools as it passes through an exterior wall or an unheated attic. In our experience that moisture makes lint cling to the duct instead of blowing out.

So if you suspect a clogged dryer vent and your dryer has been slow since last spring, don’t wait for February. Fall is the easy time to get it done.

What can you check yourself?

Plenty. Run through this list once a month:

  • ✅ Clean the lint screen before or after every load
  • ✅ Wash the lint screen with warm soapy water now and then, since dryer sheet residue can block it
  • ✅ Go outside with the dryer running and check the flap opens and the airflow feels strong
  • ✅ Clear snow, leaves or bird nests away from the exterior cap
  • ✅ Look behind the dryer for a crushed or kinked connector duct
  • ✅ Replace any plastic or thin foil duct with metal
  • ✅ Keep boxes, clothes and cleaning supplies away from the dryer

What you can’t do with a household vacuum is clear a clogged dryer vent along its full length, especially through a ceiling or up to the roof. That takes a rotary brush long enough to reach the whole run.

When is a clogged dryer vent NOT the problem?

Sometimes the vent is clear and something else is going on. Before you book anyone, rule these out:

  • The dryer isn’t heating at all. Clothes come out cold, not just damp. That’s usually a heating part, and it’s a job for an appliance repair technician, not a vent cleaner.
  • The washer isn’t spinning properly. If clothes come out of the washer dripping, the dryer has far more water to remove.
  • The drum is overloaded. Packing it full slows drying no matter how clean the vent is.
  • The lint screen is clogged with residue. Hold it under the tap. If water pools on top, wash it.

If we check your vent and it’s clear, we’ll tell you. You shouldn’t pay to clean something that isn’t dirty.

What does professional dryer vent cleaning include?

When we clean a clogged dryer vent, we disconnect the dryer, run a rotary brush through the full length of the vent from inside to the exterior cap, and vacuum out everything it loosens. We clean the cap and flap, check the connector duct behind the dryer, and test the airflow at the outside when we’re done. You’ll see what came out. Some of these jobs fill a garbage bag.

We’re an independent, NADCA-certified team based in Ottawa, and we work in English and French. Dryer vent cleaning starts from $199, and we confirm your price before we start. You’ll find details for your area on our dryer vent cleaning service in Ottawa page. Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?

The most common sign of a clogged dryer vent is clothes needing more than one cycle to dry. Others are an exterior flap that doesn’t open while the dryer runs, a hot laundry room, a burning smell, and lint around the outside cap. Any one of these is worth a check.

À quelle fréquence faut-il nettoyer un conduit de sécheuse ?

NFPA recommends once a year, or more often if clothes start taking longer than normal to dry. Large families, homes with pets, and long or rooftop vent runs usually need cleaning every six to nine months. If your drying time has crept up, clean it now and then return to a regular schedule.

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Lint is flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat right where the lint collects. NFPA reports that the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. Cleaning the lint screen every load and the vent at least yearly is the best prevention.

Puis-je nettoyer moi-même le conduit de ma sécheuse ?

You can clean the lint screen, the area behind the dryer, the connector duct and the exterior cap. A short, straight vent can sometimes be brushed with a home kit. Long runs, multiple bends and roof exits are hard to clean fully without professional brushes and vacuum equipment.

Combien coûte le nettoyage d'un conduit de sécheuse ?

BlueGuard’s dryer vent cleaning starts from $199 in all the areas we serve. Long runs, roof exits and heavy blockages such as bird nests can add time. We confirm your price before any work starts, so you know the number before we arrive.

Why does my dryer vent clog faster in winter?

You run more loads in winter, snow can block the exterior cap, and warm moist air cools in cold vent runs, which can make lint stick to the duct walls. Check the outside flap after every big snowfall and keep the area around the cap clear.
