Air duct cleaning is simple in theory and easy to get wrong in practice. Whether you are doing surface upkeep yourself or hiring it out, these are the dos and don’ts that separate a clean that helps from one that wastes money, or damages your system.

DO: Replace your filter before anything else

The single highest-value habit. A fresh filter every ninety days, more often with pets, stops most dust from ever reaching your ducts. Skipping it is why ducts re-dirty quickly even after a professional clean.

DON’T: Force rigid brushes into flexible duct

The most common DIY damage. Flex duct tears easily, and a torn duct leaks conditioned air into your attic or walls, raising your heating bill permanently. If you cannot reach it gently with a vacuum, leave it to equipment built for it.

DO: Clean the vent covers and returns you can reach

Pull each register, vacuum the opening, wash the cover, and dry it before replacing. Returns collect the most dust, so keep those grilles clear. This surface work is genuinely useful and safe to do yourself.

DON’T: Fall for the $99 “whole-home” special

A real cleaning takes two to four hours with truck-mounted equipment; nobody does that profitably for $99. The low price is bait, the bill climbs once the crew is inside, and you still get an incomplete job. Hire flat-rate and certified instead.

DO: Verify the company actually removes debris

Proper cleaning uses negative pressure: a sealed system and a powerful vacuum that captures debris into a container outside your home. Ask how they contain what they loosen. Source removal is the standard; anything that just blows air around pushes dust deeper.

DON’T: Assume newer homes don’t need it

New construction packs drywall and framing dust deep into ductwork before move-in. Plenty of two-year-old homes need a first clean more than a well-maintained older one.

DO: Clean at the right moments

Beyond the routine three-to-five-year interval, prioritize a cleaning after renovations, after buying a home whose history you do not know, when you get a new pet, or if anyone develops unexplained allergy or respiratory symptoms indoors.

DON’T: Use duct cleaning to mask a mold problem

If there is visible mold or a persistent musty smell, cleaning alone is not the answer; the moisture source has to be fixed first or it returns. Disturbing mold without proper containment spreads it through the home. Get the cause addressed, then clean.

DO: Insist on before-and-after proof

A reputable technician shows you dated photos of the inside of your ducts before and after. If a company cannot or will not, you have no way to know what you paid for.

DON’T: Seal or “fog” ducts instead of cleaning them

Chemical foggers and sealants are sometimes sold as shortcuts. They do not remove buildup, they coat it. Physical source removal is what actually cleans a duct system.

FAQ

What is the most common air duct cleaning mistake?

Skipping filter changes between cleanings, followed closely by hiring a cheap special that turns into an upsell. Both cost more over time.

Can I damage my ducts by cleaning them wrong?

Yes. Forcing brushes into flex duct tears it and causes permanent air leaks. Surface vacuuming is safe; deep cleaning needs proper equipment.

Do I need chemicals or sanitizer with a cleaning?

Not usually. Sanitizing is an optional add-on for specific situations such as mold history or odours, not a default part of every clean.
